A Study on the Hygienic Status of Water Pollution of Kwang-Ju City Area

Abstract
The water quality of Kwang-ju city channels was studied en hygienic stand points from January to December 1963, and the. following results were obtained.
1. The pollution of channels become greater in downstream within the resident area, and gradually recovered after getting free from the resident area.
2. The water in Tong-gae channel was more heavily polluted than that in Kwang-ju channel. The reason for this was presumed that the former has narrower width less flow volume and passing through the more, crowded and lower income area than the latter.
3. The greatest contamination occured in summer season, especially the increases of BOD and MPN were conspicuous.
4. The pollution was dependent largely upon human excreta, domestic sewage and wastes in both channels rather than industrial wastes or effluents.
5. In order to protect the citizen¢¥s health from the hazards of contaminated water to secure potable water for the citizen¢¥s use and health education on environmental sanitation are urgently necessitated.
